On 10 May 1933, thousands of books by authors such as Sigmund Freud, Karl Marx, Erich Maria Remarque, Carl von Ossietzky, and Kurt Tucholsky were set on fire in the public squares of many university towns in Germany. The fires had been organized by the students’ leagues, and the majority of professors took part, making it clear that there would be no opposition to the new regime.

A British poster in WWII that was intended to keep morale up. “The poster was third in a series of three. The previous two posters from the series, “Your Courage, Your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution Will Bring Us Victory”  and “Freedom is in Peril” “.

The first poster was used the most and is the best remembered. The one shown here was actually in limited use, but is remembered today because it is used as an internet meme.

Remember that the world leaders of pre-WW2 tried a policy known as “appeasement” to keep Hitler from going nuts and invading everyone (yeah, that didn’t work).
